What do used car salesman, Evangelicals, and Hawaiians all have in common? They constantly insert your name in any conversation they have with you.

The Four Stages of Life

I saw the funniest Christmas banner. Too bad I couldn’t buy it . . . my kids would be tipped off.

Furlough Day #2

After a typical morning of me dragging my feet, the kids and I decided to go to the Honolulu Zoo. Cut ahead to extensive sunscreen application, when we all faced the realization that it was just too hot and sunny. We took a detour to the Bishop Museum instead. There is currently an animatronic dinosaur exhibit and of course, the erupting volcano. Now I have yet another annual pass! We still haven’t been to the Polynesian and Hawaiian Halls yet, so there’s still a lot more to see.

After our short museum visit, Joe dutifully made them 200 water balloons for some more backyard fun. What a life!!!

Boo!

The kids spend their second Halloween in Oahu. Our house was decorated, but we wanted to up our scary factor, now that Jillian has acquiesced to more spooky decorations. Unfortunately this year there were NO Halloween decorations available at Walmart. Zip. Nadda. Of course there other stores to shop for decorations, but it was slim pickin’s and just illustrates how the down economy has affected this holiday. Good thing I had stock-piled skulls, caulderons, and flaming torches from the mainland. I’ll never take Big Lots for granted again!

Furlough Day #1

Posted by: hawaiianwannabe on: October 30, 2009

water1Friday, October 23rd. The three kids and I spent our first furlough day off together taking Jack to his routine dentist app’t followed by a trip to the local water park in Kapolei, Hawaii called Wet ‘N Wild. (We love Kapolei because it has a TARGET Store.) We have annual passes, and apparently, so do lots of other local families. I was surprised to see how many kids were accompanied by both their parents. I still don’t know how the average Hawaiian family can manage 17 lost days of supervised childcare.

Nonetheless, we had a great time, and ran into Jack’s two classmates towards the end of our day there. I must confess that I do love the time off with Jack 9, Rhys 7, and Jillian 5. I just wish it were under other circumstances.

Ok. I know this is a bubblegum-teeny bopper song, but it’s a break-up song, so technically on my acceptable list.

More Big Island photos

Here are some photos from our October 2009 Semester Break trip to the Big Island.

1. Rainbow Falls in the heart of Hilo

2. View of Halema’uma’u Crater from the look out point at Jaggar Museum.

3. Pu’uhonua o Honaunau (Place of Refuge) south of Kailua-Kona.
An ancient Hawaiian village where lawbreakers could escape to avoid the punishment of death. If one manages to elude captors, he would perform an absolution ceremony for total forgiveness. The main hitch that I could see is that this place of sanctuary is nestled in the Royal Grounds of the chief’s home! Yikes.
